Rhythm of a Ride: My Husband’s Cycling Incident

After a joyful 2025 Chinese New Year family reunion, I finally got a few days to wind down and rest. Some background for context — in the past two months before the festivities, my mom was recovering from an accident in my home, hence, there were some adjustments made to our usual routine. Nevertheless, Mom was up and cooking up a storm during CNY, so that was truly a much-cherished celebration.

As the festivities quietened at home, my husband went out on his usual cycling routine. It was February 1, and as early as 7:15 AM, I received an emergency call informing me that Aaron had been knocked down by a car and was enroute to Hospital Putrajaya.
I hurried over and was told that he had fractured rib cage bones. At that point, my worries grew, fearing Aaron would also be at risk of hemopneumothorax like Mom. I then transferred him to Sunway Medical Centre for further treatment and follow-up due to proximity to home, which was vital for my well-being as a caretaker too.

Nurturing relationships

While Aaron did have a minor hemopneumothorax, he did not require chest tube insertion. He was discharged after 3 days to recuperate at home with an exercise routine to follow. Every morning, he sat up slowly, inhaling deeply and exhaling with care. He began doing the breathing exercises with my Mom, who also had hemopneumothorax from her accident. These sessions developed a deeper bond between them, one that sometimes does not require words to articulate.
I watched as the two people I love most, side by side, reclaimed their breath, one painful inhale at a time. Yet, there was a quiet strength within them, as they trusted in the routine to aid their recovery. That daily ritual became my reminder — every breath is a gift, and love can multiply even in pain.

Love alone doesn’t pay hospital bills.

And that’s where the often-overlooked blessing came in: our medical plan with Great Eastern. It covered everything — every scan, every test, every night in the ward. I didn’t have to ask, “Can we afford this?” I could focus on asking, “What does Aaron need?”

Having these plans on hand greatly reduced the burden of finance and allowed us to focus on the crucial areas of selecting the best possible treatment and determining recovery strategies. As a professional in the insurance industry, I’ve seen the relief in many of my clients when they needed to utilize the coverage, and now, I can truly say that I know the feeling.

While I do not deny that the cost of medical expenses is on the rise, I believe that prudence is planning with what you have, instead of waiting until you have enough to begin.
