From Crisis to Kitchen: My Mother’s Inspiring Recovery
2024 was kind. Life was steady, joyful, and everything was in place. But as we know, storms don’t always come with a warning.
An unexpected whirlwind
In December 2024, my Mom met with a motorcycle accident. Mom is 76 years old and lives in Sitiawan, Perak, on her own. She was riding her motorcycle to run her usual errands when she lost her balance and fell by the roadside.
My aunt came rushing to her after hearing a loud bang. She found her unconscious. Mom suffered multiple injuries — a broken ribcage, open fracture of metacarpal bones, degloving wounds on her left hand, and torn facial skin. She was admitted to the hospital. The next day, a right hemopneumothorax occurred — both air and blood accumulated in her chest cavity and caused breathing difficulties. It was heartbreaking to see our Mom, who had always been our rock, lying so helpless. The next eight days were filled with hospital visits, medical updates, and emotional highs and lows.
Ties that bind, in spirit and works
Her grandchildren were by her side, holding her hands, praying for her. Our church community, both from our hometown and Kuala Lumpur, rallied around us in prayer and encouragement. Although it was not feasible for them to help in person, those calls and texts gave us much encouragement.
While it was difficult to see Mom lying in bed, I felt a deep sense of joy that our family was united in supporting Mom. All of us had only one purpose — treatment, discharge from the hospital, and a follow-up recovery plan. We made decisions together with objectivity and listened to one another. I truly believe this experience grew us as a family.
The power of planning ahead
One thing we didn’t have to worry about during this storm was money. Thanks to the medical plan we had in place from Great Eastern Life Assurance, every hospital bill was covered. With a yearly coverage of RM1 million, we could focus entirely on what truly mattered — making the best medical decisions for her recovery. This incident truly convinced me that financial planning is not about fearing the worst; it’s about creating space to fully show up when your loved ones need you most.
Healing and a beautiful reunion
After taking two months to recover, our Mom bounced back with strength that amazed us. Despite her age and existing heart condition, we celebrated Chinese New Year together in February 2025. The highlight? She was back in the kitchen, cooking our beloved Hock Chew dishes, filling our home with the warmth and aroma of tradition.
When I look back, I’m grateful for two major aspects:
- the strength of family unity
- protection plans that play a role in easing the whole process
Storms in life are inevitable, but faith, unity, and planning can turn the tide in how we weather them.
